CRM or Crew Resource Management has evolved a great deal throughout the history of aviation. Unfortunately, accidents have and will continue to occur. With the introduction of larger and more complex aircraft, the number of humans required to operate these complex machines has decreased per plane, and has lead many to believe that the probability of human error has increased dramatically. There are studies upon studies of aircraft accidents and incidents resulting from breakdowns in crew coordination and, more specifically, crew communication. These topics are the driving force behind CRM. This paper will attempt to present the concept of CRM and its impact on aviation safety in modern commercial aviation and give a history of how CRM has evolved into what it is today. This concept is not a new one, but it is continually evolving and can even include non-human elements such as computer controlled operations in the cockpit. Since the beginning of aviation pilots have been tasked with operating aircraft safely while having to be effective at the same time. Obviously we run into most of are problems in aviation when we start worrying more about the effectiveness then the safety. Letââ¬â¢s look at what CRM truly is and what it stands for. CRM has been widely used to improve the operation and safety of flight crews in the cockpit for quite sometime. The concept originated in 1979, in response to a NASA workshop that examined the role that human error plays in air crashes. CRM emphasizes the role of human factors in high-stress, high-risk environments. John K. Lauber, a psychologist member of the National Transportation Safety Board, defined CRM as "using all available sources- information, equipment, and people- to achieve safe and efficient flight operations." Simply speaking CRM encompasses team training, it brings everybody together and brings out the positive asspects of everyoneââ¬â¢s training. This team concept has evolved over time. Or...
